International Charity Day. The 5th of September 2024.
Charity is at the forefront of positive change!
The United Nations General Assembly made the 5th of September International Charity Day. Founded in 2012 to honour and recognise the life and work of Mother Teresa who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She was an Albanian/Indian Catholic Nun who devoted her whole life to eradicating poverty, suffering and persecution. Striving for Peace across the world. She was also responsible for Founding Missionaries of Charity. Through her work I believe that she gave every human being that she came across a dignity in life and a dignity in dying.
When I was little there seemed to be lots of negative connotations surrounding the word Charity. But perhaps more importantly what Charity suggested. It was almost as if those who relied on it were somehow seen as the lowly members of our society. Very sadly, I think that this is an archaic opinion that is still held by certain proportions of our society. Instead I always see Charity as such a positive thing! After all in my case. Both my home and my life is, and always has been, wholly underpinned by the phenomenal work that they do. Particularly surrounding my lifelong complex, physical disability. That said. I think it is very important to point out that in my opinion. Anyone and everyone could potentially find themselves in a position whereby they themselves need to be supported by a Charity. Let’s not forget that this could be for the long term as in my case, or indeed the short term. When we think of Charity – I suppose the vast majority of people would instantly think about money? And yes. Charities need vital consistent sources of money. In order to be able to continue the vital work and support that is not provided by the Government. Therefore Thank Goodness for the Charities who are totally and utterly committed to working with other Organisations. To push for life-changing and life enriching difference. So much can be gained just by small changes. Through education, compassion, patience, guidance and support. Of course ISL is a leading light in this! The best and by far one of the most shining examples of an active, multi agency, committed approach to supporting the most vulnerable within our society. As I write this I feel quite emotional – I think many other Organisations and Charities could and should learn so very much from ISL. Charity should remain just that – Charity!
After all the whole ethos of Charity is to give…
Let’s get back to basics and really look at the best and most effective way to help each other….
That means. Please re-examine, rebuild, reinvent, re-look at how you as a Charity or an Organisation can keep the heart of humanity beating together.
