Aeturnum Libertas-World Humanitarian Day
Topic of The Month:
World Humanitarian Day – 19th of August 2024.
I would like to start off this blog by recognising and celebrating the work of humanitarians across our world!
When I think of humanitarians I instantly think of the human response to life saving, catastrophic and or emergency situations such as war.
With my initial thoughts in mind. World Humanitarian Day – The 19th of August – Became such following a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq.
An attack which killed 22 Humanitarian Aid Workers – including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq.
Sergio Vieira de Mello.
Five years later the General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day.
A day to honour the work of humanitarians across the world. Especially those who have paid the ultimate price of losing their own lives to safeguard and protect the lives of others.
And whilst I myself will never be able to physically put myself in the middle of a potentially life changing situation in order to protect my fellow human beings.
I one million percent believe in the key principles of humanitarianism.
If we consider the Core Principles As Identified:
Humanity.
Neutrality.
Impartiality.
Independence.
I feel that it is a mistake to wait for some kind of crisis in order to apply these Core Principles. Why wait?! When in my view it would definitely create a far greater sense of unity and respect for humanity if we strive to apply them in our every day lives.
That said. Please don’t ignore what we ourselves are not directly affected by…
As pleading ignorance is no excuse…
There is also a tendency to think that money is the answer to everything. Instead. Maybe we as humans need to first encourage others to rethink their own attitudinal barriers.
Remember my very first Introductory Blog to you all Entitled ‘A Bit Of Me’. When I said:
“I am completely passionate about doing what is right for humanity.. .
And I believe that many great things can be achieved just by practicing kindness and gratitude!”
I believe that life is truly precious! And one might argue that I feel this so strongly because I am all to aware of the absolute fragility of life because of my own disability…
And of course this could be the case. Particularly given that I rely so very heavily on my fellow humans to have a crazy/beautiful life!
However. Irrespective of my own set of circumstances. I will forever remain completely passionate about humanity!
This is another great opportunity to once again mention Amul Alamuddin. – Now Clooney. A woman whom I will always admire so very much for her work as an International and Human Rights Lawyer. She is a force of nature in her quest for justice whilst at the same time acting with an unwavering sense of courage, compassion and integrity.
Please check out The Social Founders Network Podcast with Caroline Diehl! A lady who has made it her mission to shine a light on life changing and enriching efforts towards social, community and global positive change!
And respectfully. To all those who continue to work hard as humanitarians to bring Peace to our world. Thank you so very much. May you continue to do so in the name of all those who have very sadly lost their lives…
Not forgetting of course, the plight of the loved ones and friends that they may have left behind…
So…
“In a world where you can be anything… Be kind”
